Dracula 1931 Film

The classic “Dracula” horror film that launched horror movies as we know them today. Crazy to think that this fine movie was filmed more than 75 years ago. While their are several scenes that look quite amateurish (plastic bats that fly around the castle come to mind) but in the end Lugosi offers up a creepy dark character that has forever found his place in horror film genre.

The best version to purchase (dvd) was reissued in 1999, it features three fine versions. The original 1931 version with basically no background music, the 1999 rescoring of the movie by composer Philip Glass, and the extremely interesting Spanish version, made at the same time as the original (with totally different actors).

It is amazing just how different the two versions are (the Glass soundtrack to the original). Many people including myself prefer the original with no soundtrack, which offers several scenes that are “deathly quite”.
